AbstractRadio session - dem's da breakz - december 2016

Good people,

This time 'round in what will inevitably - as night follows day - come to be known as our "legendary" series of sessions, our devilish ninjas here at the AbRad work-house have knocked up a slightly twisted selection of action-packed beats and pieces for all you head-nodders.

Chock full of blunted funk, dirty beats, phat jazzy breaks and good ol' drum & bass and featuring, among others, the corrupted talents of Dusty Springfield, Led Zepellin, Marvin Gaye and the Reverend Al Green, there's nothing too hard on the mixer here, but more than plenty enough to scare the neighbours with.

File under uneasy listening.

x

The AbRad team.

AbRad Video: Litmus vs Freemasons - Uninvited

"Bravely we venture into uncharted waters."

In a departure from the norm, we thought "Wouldn't a video be nice every now and then."
So, in what will be undoubtedly a very occasional series, here's our first sortie into the wonderful world of on-line video...

Freemasons - Uninvited
Litmus Extended Edit

Show some appreciation:→

Featuring the combined vocals talents of both Alanis Morissette [the original unlicenced version] and Bailey Tzuke (daughter of Judy) [the official 2007 rework] married up with some eye-popping visuals, we think we've got off to a half decent start.

AbstractRadio session - masters at work 2016

Kenny Dope Gonzalez and Little Louie Vega aka the Masters at Work are unarguably the finest production team yet to grace the world of house music. Their truly gargantuan talents and influence require no further introduction.

Dominating the scene for over two decades, and recording for every legendary US house label of the early ‘90s - Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, Cutting, Nu Groove etc, MAW’s unprecedented output embodies the essence of soul in modern dance music, with tracks ranging from twisted house to pounding latin beats, often topped off with the sweetest of vocals (it certainly helps if one of your number was husband to the ultra-gifted chanteuse India). And the quality of their remix work remains unrivalled – all in all, a bar set very high, and yet to be paralleled.

As you may be able to discern, we’re big fans.

Here’s our tribute - a rather special selection of their finest, rarest and most influential tracks and remixes, starting from the early ‘90s.

Of course, for a body of work so large, there are many omissions here – countless Kenlou dubs, including Tito Puente’s Ran Can Can and Debbie Gibson’s One Step Ahead, Chris Cueva’s Hip Hop, MAW’s I Can’t Get No Sleep, Souffles & Everybody Needs Somebody to name a tiny selection. And then there’s their more recent solo work…

Maybe we’ll knock up another some time down the line?

With huge love and respect,

The AbRad team

AbstractRadio session - august 2016

Meanwhile…

Here’s another box of delights lovingly crafted for your pleasure - a cornucopia of house, from bigroom belters to disco reworks, featuring not just one but two previous AbRad tunes of the week; perennial dancefloor favourites Snap!, Boney M and Kylie [admittedly, rather twisted versions thereof] and, shoved onto the end for good measure, a smattering of AbRad faves, all very dear to our hearts.

Enjoy.

AbstractRadio session - july 2016

Like the veritable bad penny, we’re back once again, diving into another stack of delectable danceable delights.

Tons of tremendous toe-tappers here, from smooth vocals to big summer tunes, including Liem’s great reworking of a Sydney Youngblood classic, F. Rizardo’s re-jig of Joyce Sims, DJ Dan and Purple Disco’s cracking contributions, and then there’s the filthy bass running through The Swiss’ disco-drenched Elouisa…

Enjoy, and as ever, thanks for listening.

AbstractRadio session - june 2016

This month’s spicy AbstractRadio Session Recipe:

Take a bit of deep and a pinch of disco. Throw in a splash of funky together with just a hint of old school to bring out the full flavour. Add a dash of all-time classic for good measure.

Leave to marinate in a dark place for several months before serving.
No extra seasoning is necessary.

[serving suggestion – loud, with good, solid footwear]

As is customary for any AbRad session, every track’s a winner, but deserving of a special mention in dispatches are:
J. Sikora’s “Larry’s Garage”, Sahagun’s twisted latin workout “The 3rd Advice”, Kink’s ethereal “Pocket Piano” and X-Press 2’s autumnal masterpiece - “Give It”.

Enjoy!

More soon

The Abrad team.

Tune of the Week - No.9 - 12.05.16

With so much wonderful music knocking around here in the Abstract studio, we thought we'd take the opportunity to showcase a few very special items that are close to our hearts. Our choices for Tune of the Week may be fresh through the door, or decades old - our aim is that they will always epitomise the ethos of AbstractRadio...

And welcome back to our continuing search for aural excellence...

Milk & Sugar ft. Nomfusi - Heat (African Day) - Sandy Dae Mix -
Enormous Tunes ETR308

Show some appreciation:→

Coming to an AbRad Session near you soon, here's our latest tune of the ... well, you can insert your own appropriate time-frame here [we suspect you're not all sitting on the edge of you collective seats awaiting our Tunes of the Week].

Featuring the silky vocals of South African chanteuse Nomfusi, Heat tells a tale of pastoral existence; collecting wood to make a fire, grinding flour for bread, taking water from the near-by river - no story of urban life and love here. In fact, she may well be camping, though we suspect not. Some of her lyrics remain unclear to us here at AbRad mansions, but frankly, she had us after the lines:
"Wake up in the morning, I was feeling kind of cold so I decided that I'd go and get some heat. Chopping at the wood so I can take it home with me so I can get the fire started for me tea."

[It's her pronunciation of "tea" that gets us - just exquisite!].

Milk and Sugar of course require very little by way of introduction - they've been knocking out cracking house tunes for decades, but the accolades here go to the remix duties carried out by relative newcomer Sandy Dae. She's added a cracking little bassline to the original, plus a couple of fat breaks, and has tightened the track up a fair bit, delivering a really fantastic floorfiller.

Go on, get some heat.

AbstractRadio session - dirtydiscodubs II - april 2016

And we're back, with a second seasonal helping of smooth summery disco reworks, dubs and edits.

As ever, it’s hard to separate the men from the boys track-wise, but both Beaten Space Probe contributions are crackers, as are those from Fingerman, Stranger Danger, JC Gavri, Alkalino, LNTG, Anthony Mansfield, KS French, Ron Basejam and 78 Edits.

It’s all sun-blessed and drenched in vitamin C.

Enjoy.
